NZ Post announce Contact Centre Job loses in Wellington

On Wednesday 26 Feb, 70 finance employees in NZ Post's corporate head office were told they are among them, while 44 workers at the company's Petone call centre also got the news.


About 110 Wellington-based New Zealand Post workers have been told they will lose their jobs, as the company begins enacting its five-year strategy.  The struggling state-owned company announced in November it would axe between 1500 and 2000 jobs from its workforce of 10,600 over the next three years.  On Wednesday, 70 finance employees in NZ Post's corporate head office were told they are among them, while 44 workers at the company's Petone call centre also got the news.

The finance jobs will go by mid-April and the call centre jobs by June.  The closure of the Petone call centre, based in the Te Puni mail centre, is part of a consolidation of customer service operations.  Another 30 new customer service jobs will be created in Auckland and Christchurch, with relocation presented as an option for those 44 Petone workers.

NZ Post says the job cuts are the first part of the strategy announced last year.  "Both of these are a reflection of the company moving through the strategy that was outlined last November," a spokeswoman told NZ Newswire.  "This is just part of the process."
But the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU) is concerned NZ Post is pulling jobs from New Zealand's capital without considering all the options.  "While the company has offered to relocate people to Auckland and Christchurch it is unrealistic for ordinary working people," EPMU spokesman Joe Gallagher said.  "It is clear the government has no strategy to grow jobs outside of Auckland and Christchurch."

Under the five-year strategy, NZ Post will progressively reduce its directly owned retail spaces, cut urban delivery to three days a week and focus on expanding Kiwibank.  The strategic changes follow a decline in mail volumes, of about eight per cent a year, with 328 million fewer items posted in 2013 than in 2002.  The government says without a change to delivery services, it may have to subsidise NZ Post to the tune of more than $30 million each year.
